Celebrate!
Eight years ago we started exploring the possibility of
purchasing some portion of the Mental Health Trust lands in Gustavus.
Three years ago a purchase agreement was signed between The Nature Conservancy
and Mental Health Trust. In late May we got the appraisal for the over
3,000 acres described in that purchase agreement. Final price tag: ~$1,000/acre
for a total of $3.3 million. We have ~$2.5 million in the bank. The Nature
Conservancy is committed to making up the difference. This includes all
the beach front parcels, the upper Good River piece and the upper Rink Creek
parcel.
Celebration party: Everyone is invited to Hayden and
Bonnie Kaden's on Old Same Road for a potluck dinner and live music by Justin
Smith and friends, starting 7 p.m. September 11.
Preserve wildlife,
scenery, and opportunities for hunting, foraging, and recreation in Gustavus,
Alaska.

To make the Gustavus Land Legacy a reality, we need to raise four

The Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority
has asked Gustavus for
input on how Mental Health Trust land in Gustavus is managed. A subcommittee of GCA, the Mental
Health Lands Group, formed to gather information and communicate with the
MHLT. Nathan Borson is the chair
and Hank Lentfer is the Executive Secretary and main contact
person. This group has since adopted the name Gustavus
Land Legacy.
This group was formed at the October
8, 1998, GCA meeting after the results of a GCA
community survey showed a major interest in what was going to happen with
the Mental Health Lands in Gustavus. The purpose of the new committee is to
inform and educate the community on issues related to these lands and act to
preserve those lands if the community wishes. The Mental Health Lands Trust owns
3,000 acres, about 1/5 of all the land in Gustavus. More committee and land
information is available at the public
library. Read Greg Streveler's October, 1998, background
article and Meadow Brook's open
letter in the November issue of Icy Passages for more information on this
subject.
See also: a history of the litigation
that re-constituted the Mental Health Trust and gave it ownership of the land in
question.
Progress
The group submitted a final,
community-approved proposal to the Mental Health Trust on December 29, 1999.
This proposal is based on a formal Memorandum
of Understanding between GCA and the trust.
Please see our News section for more recent
accomplishments.
