Minutes

Gustavus Mental Health Lands Group

November 10, 1998

Attendance: Greg Streveler, Lewis Sharman, Liz Marantz, TJ Lazar, Nate Borson, Meadow Brook

Community Interest Poll Survey. The group decided that all Post Office boxholders, including boxholders that are not presently in Gustavus, will be mailed a survey. Nate Borson will re-format the survey so that neither a mailing envelope nor a return envelope will be needed. Meadow Brook will look into whether a bulk mailing permit is the cheapest way to send out the surveys. Copy Works in Juneau will pick up the survey original at the airport and will copy and fold it. We will try and find someone to bring them back to Gustavus for free. The target date for sending out the surveys is November 18. Surveys will be due back December 7th.

Public Meeting. At the last Mental Health Lands Group meeting, it was decided to hold a public meeting during the survey comment period to raise the community's awareness of Mental Health lands and hopefully, spur people to fill out the survey. Details about the public meeting were to be worked out at this November 10 meeting. Accordingly, the present group decided that the public meeting objectives are two-fold: first, to raise awareness of Mental Health Trust lands in Gustavus, describe various options for their conservation, describe the actions Gustavus has taken to date and timeline for the future and answer questions, and second, gather information from the public about how they use specific MHLT parcels, how they value them and if they support trying to purchase conservation easements or full title to them. The public meeting will provide another venue (in addition to the mail-in survey) for people to express their opinions and learn more about MHLT lands in Gustavus.

Public Meeting Agenda The group decided on the following agenda:

I.A. Introduction, Purpose of the Meeting, How Information Gathered at the Meeting will be Used, Background Information, Activities to Date, Timeline. (Meadow Brook will be the speaker for this section and moderator throughout the meeting. Nate Borson and Heidi Robichaud will prepare maps and run the projector if needed)

I.B. Questions from the Audience and Answers (All participate. The MHLT and Trust for Public Land will be invited to participate via teleconference or in person to answer questions. Liz and TJ will be note takers)

II Community Input -- how people in Gustavus use specific MHLT parcels, how they value them and if they support trying to purchase conservation easements or full title to them. (Audience participation. Liz and TJ will be note takers, Lewis will note comments on the map. Heidi and Nate will prepare the map(s) and run the projector if needed)

Publicity for the Meeting. Liz will make signs and post them at the store, Gusto, and PO. Meadow will e-mail an announcement to everyone with e-mail who has attended a MHLT lands meeting and will also e-mail Bruce Paige, who will forward the announcement to all SEAKNET'ers. Meadow will fax a PSA to KTOO and KJNO in Juneau and call Peter at the school with an announcement to go into the parents' weekly "red folders." A phone tree was also suggested as a valuable way to get the word out about the meeting.

Compilation of Results. The information gathered at the public meeting will be compiled by Greg Streveler. The information from the surveys will be compiled by Tania Lewis, Eric Syrene, Greg Streveler and Meadow Brook. All the information will then be summarized in one document and map.

(Prepared by Meadow Brook)
